What to Do in Tissamaharama: A Local’s Guide to Wildlife, Lakes and Village Life
Many travellers arrive in Tissamaharama with one thing in mind: a safari in Yala. I understand why. Wildlife is a wonderful reason to visit this part of Sri Lanka. But living and working here has shown me that there is more to experience when you leave a little space in your itinerary.
Tissamaharama often called Tissa is a useful base for exploring the wildlife and culture of the south-east. It is also a place where the day can begin quietly, beside a lake or on a village road, before the excitement of a safari begins.
Start with the lakes and birdlife
The lakes around Tissa are worth experiencing at a gentle pace. Early morning and late afternoon can be rewarding times to watch birds, notice the changing light and enjoy the landscape. Bring binoculars if you have them, move slowly, and give wildlife plenty of space. Bird sightings change with season, weather and water levels, so part of the pleasure is not knowing exactly what you will see.
Explore the countryside by tuk-tuk or bicycle
Beyond the main roads, the surrounding countryside offers paddy fields, village lanes and everyday scenes of rural life. A tuk-tuk journey with a local driver can help you discover places you might otherwise pass by. If you prefer to explore independently, ask locally about suitable routes and road conditions before setting off.
Make time for local culture
Tissamaharama has important Buddhist sites and a long history connected with the ancient southern kingdom. Visit religious places respectfully: dress modestly, remove footwear where requested, and ask before photographing people or ceremonies. A temple visit can add a different dimension to a trip focused on wildlife.
Leave room for food and rest
After an early start, a relaxed meal and a little time in the shade can be just as welcome as another activity. At Richard’s Cabanas, guests can enjoy the garden, swimming pool and freshly prepared meals at The Grill. We use produce from our garden when available, and we are happy to help guests think through local experiences.
Plan your safari thoughtfully
Yala is a major attraction, but park conditions, access and seasonal closures can change. Check current arrangements before travelling and ask a trusted local operator which experience is suitable for your dates. Wildlife is never guaranteed, and a good safari is about observing the ecosystem not only searching for one famous animal.
How long should you stay?
If your schedule allows, consider two or three nights rather than treating Tissa as only a quick overnight stop. Extra time makes it easier to combine a safari with birdwatching, village exploration, local food and some rest between outings.
At Richard’s Cabanas, our multi-night stays are designed around this broader experience of Tissa.

Most of all, arrive with a little curiosity. The best memories of a place are not always the biggest attractions; sometimes they are the quiet moments in between.
